Preserves

Fruit preserved in syrup, or glyka tou koutaliou are the most iconic Greek dessert. Thrifty homemakers would conserve any fruit or vegetable that couldn’t be consumed in its prime, or parts that would go to waste, like citrus peel. There’s no lighter or more satisfying way to end a meal than a few pieces of luscious, syrupy fruit on creamy Greek yogurt, or on its own, to balance a cup of strong coffee. You can also try it with ice cream, cheesecake and even some soft cheeses.
